A portrait is not a likeness. The moment an emotion or fact is transformed into a photograph it is not longer a fact, but an opinion. There is no such a thing as inaccuracy in a photograph. All photographs are accurate. None of them is the truth.
A photographic portrait is a picture of someone who knows he’s being photographed, and what he does with this knowledge is as much part of the photograph as what he’s wearing or how he looks. He’s implicated in what’s happening, and he has a certain real power over the result.

Un ritratto non è una copia. Il momento un’emozione o fatto viene trasformato in fotografia, non è più un fatto, ma un’opinione. Non esiste l’accuratezza in una foto. Tutte le foto sono accurate. Nessuna di loro è la verità.
Un ritratto fotografico è una foto di qualcuno che sa di essere fotografato e cosa fa con questa consapevolezza è parte della fotografia quanto quello che indossa o come appare. E’ implicato in quello che sta succedendo e ha un certo potere reale sopra il risultato.
