New Project: Assistants – The People Behind The People Behind The Camera

Since I moved to London last summer, I’ve been working freelance in two big rental photography studios: Sunbeam studios and Big Sky Studios (quite funny to see their names close together).

It’s a tough job, but it’s very popular with young photography graduates/emerging photographers because it teaches you a lot about the industry and the equipment, plus it puts you in an good position to network and make contacts in the photography world.

The studio assistant is probably the person at the lowest rank of the photography industry, but we all have to start somewhere and a lot of people apply for this position, hoping to get first into assisting good photographers and eventually to work their way up to be professional photographers themselves.

To celebrate the hard work of my colleagues and to keep shooting some personal work, I have decided to do a portrait project about assistants.

It’s a challenging project because I have to shoot while I’m at work, making the most of the tiny breaks that we get during the day.

My idea is to create a good gallery of portraits and eventually to dedicate a whole section of my website to this project, showing the portraits side by side with a picture taken by each assistant (no need to say that we’re all photographers) as diptychs.

Meanwhile I think is a good idea of keep track of the work in progress on this blog.
