I would love to tell your story. Let’s shoot some stuff together – lights, camera, action!
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work focuses on two axes: the concepts of gender and sexuality, and of relationships and community. I am drawn to explore these through the medium of photography asking the questions: what does it mean to be part of a gender/sexual minority and how are communities born out of the relationships between people?
Both my main projects (Anima Animus – portraits of trans people in the UK and Queer Rome, Queer Love – portraits of the queer community in Rome) stemmed from a need to represent trans and queer people – my people – from a sympathetic and discerning angle.
My work is part of the feminist tradition of starting from one’s experience to gain insights on the wider themes that affect our society.
“Anima Animus”, from the Jungian concepts of the masculine and feminine qualities we all possess, is a series of black and white portraits of trans and genderqueer people living in the UK. All portraits have been shot on film with a large format camera taking advantage of the Scheimpflug principle to narrowly focus on the models’ eyes. This stylistic choice is a visual response to the media’s tendencies to only focus on trans people’s bodies – virtually erasing their identities.
Once back in my native city, Rome, I widened my point of view, by leaving the studio and the large format camera behind to portray queer people at home with their loved ones, searching for the queer community I so sorely missed. “Queer Rome, Queer Love” is a series of candid portraits that celebrate a community, which is still out and proud despite rampant homophobia and transphobia in Italy.
